RANKED ITEMS
#1 — Strategy sold 3,588 bitcoin for $216 million to fund preferred-stock dividends
The largest corporate holder turned from a tailwind into an overhang. Strategy disclosed in a Monday SEC filing that it sold 3,588 bitcoin for about $216 million over the past week, its first substantial sale and a sharp break from Michael Saylor’s long-standing accumulate-only posture. The company sold 1,363 bitcoin for $80.8 million between June 29 and 30 at an average of $59,256, then 2,225 bitcoin for $135.2 million between July 1 and 5 at an average of $60,773. The sale reduced holdings to 843,775 bitcoin, acquired at an average of $74,476 for about $63.7 billion and now worth roughly $52.3 billion, leaving about $11.4 billion in paper losses.
Strategy is now selling bitcoin to service a preferred-stock obligation. That’s a leveraged vehicle managing its cap structure, not a conviction buyer. As long as the preferred trades under par, the sales pressure stays live.
Saylor said on X the proceeds funded distributions on the company’s preferred stock and replenished its US-dollar reserve, which stood at $2.55 billion as of July 5. The sale consumed more than 17% of the $1.25 billion bitcoin-sales authorization Strategy announced on June 29.
Cantor said Strategy’s recovery hinges on restoring its STRC preferred shares to par, while Grayscale said the sales should restore confidence in the financing structure and help bitcoin find a durable bottom.
Grayscale can call it bottom-forming all it wants — a forced seller feeding the tape is fuel for a flush, not a floor..
#2 — Saudi Arabia cut its August crude price to Asia by the most in over two decades
Saudi Aramco set the August official selling price for its flagship Arab Light crude to Asia at $1.50 a barrel below the Oman/Dubai benchmark, an $11-a-barrel cut from July’s $9.50 premium, according to a pricing statement published Monday.
The war premium didn’t just unwind, it inverted. Saudi is now paying customers to take barrels for the first time since the 2020 price war against Russia, , and it’s the biggest cut in over twenty years.
Reuters data back to 2003 show it is the largest reduction on record, and Bloomberg called it the biggest monthly cut in decades.
The cut followed OPEC+ ratifying a 188,000-barrel-a-day August quota increase on Sunday, and came as Russia’s flagship crude slid to pre-war levels and WTI traded near $67 to $68 below a rising 100-week average, with Brent near $70 to $72.
That’s a producer capitulating on price to defend share into a glut its own output hikes helped build.
#3 — Hedge funds turned the most bearish on the yen since 2007
Hedge funds turned their most negative on the Japanese yen since 2007, according to positioning data cited by Bloomberg, with a US regulator’s latest weekly figures showing net short positioning near $11.3 billion, close to a two-year high.
The yen held near 161.5 to 162 per dollar on Monday, giving back about half of its July 2 gains and sitting just off the 1986 low of 162.83 it touched last week, as Tokyo held off intervening despite Finance Minister Katayama reiterating readiness to act at any time.
Bloomberg separately reported that global traders turned the most positive on the dollar since 2015, and Goldman Sachs cut its 12-month yen forecast to 165 per dollar while favoring carry trades.
The dollar index sat near 101, below a three-week low after posting its largest weekly decline since April on the soft June payrolls print, with September Fed-hike odds around 50% versus about two-thirds before the report.
Japan spent a record 11.7 trillion yen defending the currency in April and May, a move that briefly lifted it before it resumed weakening.
A weak yen is bearish bitcoin. The broad dollar, though, is soft on cooling hike bets, and that’s bitcoin-supportive. Two dollar signals pointing opposite ways in one day. And Tokyo’s still not pulling the trigger, so the carry unwind risk sits there loaded.
#4 — Trump said a Ukraine settlement is getting closer after calls with Putin and Zelensky
Trump said Monday that a resolution to the Ukraine war is “getting closer than people realize” following his weekend call with Putin and a call with Zelensky, and a senior US official said he will meet Zelensky at the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7 and 8.
The Kremlin said Putin and Trump agreed to speak again in the near future, and Norway urged China to use its ties to Moscow to help bring Russia to talks.
Against the diplomacy track, Russia struck Kyiv overnight with missiles and drones, killing at least three people by AP’s count and eleven by Bloomberg’s, with Ukraine failing to intercept a single ballistic missile on the eve of the summit.
Ukraine hit the Baltic oil-export ports of Ust-Luga and Vysotsk with drones and caused a power blackout in Sevastopol. NATO Secretary General Rutte cautioned that allies do not have an endless supply of missile interceptors.
#5 — Hamas dissolved its Gaza government to transfer power to a UN-backed committee
Hamas said Monday it has dissolved its government in Gaza and is preparing to transfer power to a UN-backed technical committee, per AP. The move is part of the post-war regional realignment following the US-Iran war and its interim peace agreement.
Hamas handing its government to a UN committee is a structural shift in who runs Gaza.
#6 — Ripple secured full MiCA authorization for crypto services across all 30 EEA countries
Ripple secured full MiCA crypto-asset-service-provider authorization from Luxembourg, upgrading its preliminary license to fully compliant, according to CoinDesk and The Block.
The approval lets Ripple offer regulated crypto services for payments, financial institutions, corporates, and businesses across all 30 European Economic Area countries.
#7 — Iran continued state funeral rites for Khamenei as the reported successor stayed absent
Iran continued its multi-day state funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with his body arriving in Qom and crowds chanting for revenge against the US and Israel, while his son Mojtaba, reported as his likely successor, again did not appear.
Reuters framed the funeral as a message of Iranian defiance and a new regional order. Iran kept live its threat to assert control over Strait of Hormuz traffic and levy fees by force, and said it would give friendly countries special passage.
Pakistan bought an additional LNG cargo as Qatari flows through Hormuz remained constrained. WTI held near $67 to $68 against that backdrop.
The strait’s cheap to close and expensive to reopen.
